An HIV virion is depicted as a spherical particle surrounded by a viral envelope, featuring the surface glycoprotein, gp120, and the transmembrane glycoprotein, gp41. gp120 attaches to surface receptors on a CD4+ cell, ultimately resulting in fusion of the HIV viral envelope and the CD4+ cell membrane. The viral core enters the CD4+ cell and uses its intracellular replication mechanisms to make copies of the viral DNA. After viral replication, the CD4+ cell releases many HIV particles into the circulatory system, which spreads the virus throughout the body
