This medical illustration series shows the anatomy and function of the mitral valve, preventing backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. The images show the flow of blood from the lungs into the left atrium of the heart, through the mitral valve into the left ventricle, and out the left ventricle through the aortic valve and to the body.
